Tensor Fasciae Latae
The tensor Fasciae Latae originates from the crest of the ilium and inserts over the tibia. The action of this muscle is to flex the hip and extend the knee.To find this muscle it simply remove all skin and connective tissue, being sure not to go to deep.
Gluteus Medius
_The gluteus medius muscle starts, or "originates on the outer surface of the ilium between the iliac crest and the posterior gluteal line. This muscle inserts on the lateral surface of the trochanter. The action of this muscle is to abduct the thigh and keep the body balanced. This muscle is on the back of the pig, on the outside adjacent to the gluteus maximus. No reflection or cutting of other muscles is needed to observe this.
Biceps Femoris
The biceps femoris originates from the tuberosity of the ischium and inserts on the head of the fibula. The action of this muscle is to fix the knee joint in place and move the hip joint. Simply remove the skin and connective tissue to observe this large muscle of the thigh.
Vastus Lateralis
The vastus lateralis inserts on the lateral surface of the femur and inserts on the patella (knee bone). This muscle aids in stabilizing and extending the knee. This muscle is on the inside of the thigh and you will have to cut a muscle to reach it. Be very careful when isolating this muscle because the muscles of the inner thigh are very easy to break.
Semitendinosus
The semitendinosus originates on the anterior cavdal vertebrea and inserts along the tibia and on the facia of the leg. This muscle flexes the knee and extends the hip joint. This muscle is on the posterior side of the pig, near the gluteus medius. It is a fairly solid muscle and simply remove the skin and connective tissue then isolate.
Semimembranosus
The semimembranosus originates from the pelvis and inserts on the distal end of the femur and proximal end of the tibia. This muscle lies directly next to the semitendinosus and simply follow the same steps to locate it,
Sartorius
The sartorius originates from the iliac fascia and inserts on the proximal end of the tiia. The action of this muscle is to flex the hip and abduct the thigh. This is a thin muscle across the thigh so it may be hard to find. Use care and caution when isolating this muscle.
Gracilis
The origin of the gracilis lies on the ventral surface of the pubis and inserts on the proximal third of the tibia. The action of this muscle is to adduct the hind limbs.
Adductor Magnus
The adductor magnus muscle originates from the pubis and inserts on the femur. The action of this muscle is to adduct the thigh. This muscle is another one on the inside of the leg so use caution, so as not to damage it when isolating it and the muscles around it.
Rectus Femoris
This muscle originates from the anterior inferior iliac spine and inserts on the patellar tendon in the knee. The action of this muscle is to extend the knee as well as flexing the hip.
Vastus Medialis
The vastus medialis originates from the medial side of the femur and inserts into the quadriceps tendon. The action of this muscle is to extend the leg.
